JUNKFISH CAVIAR a new show by SUSAN GISLESON

Opening Reception
Saturday June 12th, 6:00-9:00PM
Junkfish Caviar is a series of sculptures made from salvaged or redeemed materials as well as photographs and an installation that explore a personal mythology. The show describes the possibility of finding treasure in the garbage or beauty in trauma: the ability to get something precious out of what is often considered worthless.
Read Doug MacCash's review of Junkfish Caviar at nola.com or on our Antenna Press page.

READING: TRAVIS NICHOLS & PAUL KILLEBREW Sunday May 23rd 5:00
PRESS STREET & ANTENNA are proud to host writers
TRAVIS NICHOLS & PAUL KILLEBREW
Sunday afternoon @ 5:00 on May 23rd
Paul will be reading from his new poetry collection Flowers and Travis from his debut novel Off We Go Into the Wild Blue Yonder.
Drinks and light refreshment will be served.
On Travis Nichols & Off We Go Into the Wild Blue Yonder:
Titled after the US Air Force song, this engaging debut explores the legacy of the
Greatest Generation from the perspective of Generation Y, the fallout of war through
the eyes of a pacifist, and the enduring human desire for love, adventure, truth, and
understanding.
“Nichols handles beautifully the hidden meanings in old family tales heard a hundred
times . . . the novel often reads like a piece of music that is wonderfully original.”
—PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
“Travis Nichols locates the story in history, the pistol in epistolary. This is crushingly
great, altogether original debut that reads like an incantation. I dare you
to stop reading.”—ED PARK
Born in Iowa in 1979, Travis Nichols now lives in Chicago where he is an editor at the
Poetr y Foundation. A regular contributor to the Huffington Post, former bookseller, and
tour bus manager for the Wave Books Poetr y Bus, his writing has appeared in the Village
Voice, Believer, Details, Paste, Stranger, and Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

On Paul Killebrew and Flowers
Flowers Paul Killebrew. Canarium Books (SPD, dist.), $14 (88p) ISBN 978-0-9822376-2-5
Killebrew strikes many different notes in his long-awaited debut. Amid poems cluttered with offices, “confederated ideas,” ambition, and calls from the mayor, he is sometimes cheeky, resigned to “the tremendous gap between the refrigerator/ and the conscientious voter.” Love poems like “I Will Learn to Make You Happy” and “I Love Country Music” are intimate and graceful, displaying startling and simple truths, noticed precisely. Killebrew channels Frank O'Hara, and it's tempting to get lost in these moments of ebullience. Elsewhere, John Ashbery is the New York School spirit most palpably felt, not just in the poem titled for him, but also in the long central poem “In Eight Parts,” which begins, “I grew up an anxious painting by my dad's shaking hand,” and can be read as Killebrew's “Self Portrait in a Convex Mirror.” There are also more abstract moments: “birdbath interstate flowerbed shoulder restitution fencing.” Throughout, Killebrew intelligently and compellingly explores the possibilities and uses of poetry and the experience of living in language—how its abstractions seduce, and how concrete moments like thunderstorms “make the whole thing feel justified,/ or at least without unbearable luxury.” Though his work worries the “negotiation between expectation/ and an ever-tapering capacity for surprise,” Killebrew's collection leaves us plenty of reason to be optimistic. Madam TiZo (Mrs. Little Bones) is a documentary portrait of a dynamic peasant healer from Jacmel, Haiti. The film tells the story of an extraordinary Haitian elder who runs the equivalent of a rural health clinic from her modest thatched roof hut, situated near the Jacmel River. While taking care of numerous relatives and neighbors who depend upon her, Mrs. Little Bones or Mother Bones as friends know her, simultaneously works as a midwife and leaf doctor for an endless stream of men, women and children who find their way to her yard seeking relief from their maladies. Humorous, mysterious and insightful, the film offers a rare glimpse into the traditional life of Haitian peasants. A reality where faith in the spirit world is central to resolving problems and where access to modern medicine is extremely limited. (64 minutes)
Space is limited, please r.s.v.p. at mail@chairitablefilmnetwork.

OCT. 20th AUTHOR STEPHEN ELLIOTT READS AT ANTENNA
Author Stephen Elliott Will read from his brilliant and highly praised new memoir The Adderall Diaries
WHERE: Antenna, 3161 Burgundy Street, New Orleans, LA 70117
Free and open to the public. Drinks will be served.

ABOUT THE ADDERALL DIARIES:
In the spring of 2007, a brilliant and well-known computer programmer named Hans Reiser stands accused of murdering his beautiful, estranged wife, Nina. Despite a mountain of circumstantial evidence against him, he proclaims his innocence, and the body is yet to be found. The case takes an unusual twist when Nina’s former lover, and Hans’ former best friend, Sean Sturgeon, confesses to eight unrelated murders that no one has ever heard of.
When a reporter contacts Stephen Elliott about Sturgeon—whose path he has crossed in San Francisco’s underground S&M scene—Elliott is paralyzed by writer’s block, in the thrall of Adderall dependency, and despondent over his inability to maintain a stable romantic relationship. The reporter’s questions spur Elliott to rethink Sturgeon, and to wonder exactly what kind of person confesses to murders he likely did not commit? Perhaps a man like Elliott’s own father.
So begins a brave and riveting journey through a neon landscape of false confessions, self-medication, and torturous sex. Set against the backdrop of a nation at war, in the declining years of the Silicon Valley tech boom and the dawn of Paris Hilton’s celebrity, The Adderall Diaries is at once a gripping account of a murder trial and a scorching investigation of self. Tough, tender, and unflinchingly honest, it is a breakout book by one of the most daring writers of his generation.
“Elliott ruthlessly flays the truth past the point of tears, to heights of consciousness achievable only through the masochistic act of writing. Elliott may be writing under the influence, but it’s the influence of genius.”
—VANITY FAIR
“Stephen Elliott’s superb, sprawling meta-memoir might be just what the genre needs to salvage it from the legacy of James Frey.”
—TIME OUT NEW YORK, five of five stars
“Nakedly manipulative and all but impossible to resist….[The first sentence] sucked me in twice, because the moment I revisited The Adderall Diaries (intending only to select quotes for this review) I immediately started reading the book again.”
—THE BOSTON GLOBE
“A refined, beautiful work of art…deserves a place on the shelf next to such classics of uninhibited American introspection as On the Road and A Fan’s Notes.”
—KIRKUS, starred review
A FREE SCREENING of COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS/OCT. 17th

COPYRIGHT CRIMINALS
a documentary by Benjamin Franzen & Kembrew McLeod
Can you own a sound? It depends who you ask. For more than thirty years, innovative hip-hop performers from Public Enemy to De La Soul have been re-using portions of previously recorded music in new and otherwise original compositions. But when record company lawyers got involved everything changed. What was once referred to as "borrowed melody" became a "copyright infringement." Trace the rise of hip-hop from the urban streets of New York to its current status as a multibillion-dollar industry. (70 minutes)
